As a companion to the leaf-derived essential oil post, I thought a post about essential oils derived from another part of a tree- the bark – was in order. Essential oils from the bark of a tree tend to have very rich, intense, heavy scents and when used in a synergy, are generally the base note. Three essential oils that we use here at Way Out Wax from the bark of trees are cinnamon, cedarwood and rosewood (in our Escentual Love synergy and Indian Summer candles).
Everyone’s familiar with the warm, spicy scent of cinnamon from their kitchen. You can find cinnamon essential oil in our single scent cinnamon candle, our Cozy Home synergy, and our organic Sol Tranquility candle. The essential oil of cinnamon is steam distilled from the bark of the tree and the aroma is warming and arousing. When you burn our cinnamon or Cozy Home candles, it creates a feeling of comfort and the desire to snuggle by a hearth. Maybe it’s just me, but I find that when I burn a cinnamon candle, it stimulates my sweet tooth! Did you know that the yummy cinnamon you put on your toast is powdered tree bark?!
Cedarwood has a wonderful fresh and woodsy aroma. Throughout antiquity, cedarwood has been used in medicines and as incense. The essential oil, when applied topically, is said to combat hair loss! The aroma of cedarwood is harmonizing and grounding and therefore makes a wonderful meditation companion. We offer a single scent cedarwood candle and use cedarwood in combination with other woodsy oils in our Northern Forest and Vermont Soy Forest candles.
Rosewood has a delightful woody and floral aroma. Rosewood essential oil is antibacterial and antifungal and is said to improve skin elasticity when applied topically. The aromatherapeutic benefits include promoting calmness and stabilizing the emotions. You can find rosewood in our Escentual Love synergy and our Vermont Soy Indian Summer essential oil candles.

Since it’s autumn in Vermont, one of the most enjoyable things to do is simply take in the scenery and explore the landscape as the leaves change color. Reds, yellows and oranges are starting to show here already. This colorful display led me to the idea for this post- exploring a few of the essential oils we use here at Way Out Wax that are derived from the leaves of plants and trees, such as sage, tea tree and eucalyptus.
The first familiar leaf-derived essential oil we’ll talk about is sage. Sage is one of my favorite essential oils. Sage was considered by the Romans to be a sacred oil and the plant’s latin name Salvia is derived from the word “salvation.” It has a clean, herbaceous scent. The essential oil can be used as a circulatory stimulant and contains some properties similar to the hormone estrogen. When used in aromatherapy, sage is cleansing and clarifying.
Tea tree (in our Bug Out sprays and candles) is another well-known and popular essential oil derived from leaves. It’s a very antiseptic, antimicrobial and antifungal oil when applied topically (usually diluted). It can be found in myriad personal care products including shampoos and skin creams. The fragrance is fresh and camphorous. In addition to all of those benefits, it’s also a highly effective, all natural insect repellent!
In this post, I briefly talked about the decongestant properties of eucalyptus. You might recognize its wonderfully aromatic menthol smell, which makes it an effective and popular ingredient in cough drops! It is also antimicrobial and a great disinfectant. Eucalyptus essential oil is energizing and purifying when used in aromatherapy. You also might remember learning in school that eucalyptus leaves are a staple in the diet of koala bears!
A few other leaf-derived essential oils we use are rosemary, peppermint and marjoram (in the Sweet Dreams synergy). Grab some today to celebrate the power of leaves and the arrival of fall!
It’s my favorite time of year! The hot, humid summer days have passed, the nights are becoming crisp and the air is refreshingly cool. Soon we’ll be visiting the pumpkin patch, going to the harvest market and stacking the wood for winter. It’s also the time of year when candles become a mainstay in daily life for a lot of folks. But, with so many options, what candle to burn is the question.
Ditch that old bright orange pumpkin candle and the crimson red apple cider one in favor of our non-toxic essential oil soy candles. Those brightly colored candles contain dyes, additives and synthetic fragrances, which, when burned, can release toxins into your home! At Way Out Wax, our candles are made using only non-GMO soy wax and essential oils… no additives and nothing synthetic! That’s why they are so delicious!
Here are the top 5 healthy, essential oil candles for fall from us here at Way Out Wax:

I admit, a few months ago, I would have told you that I hated the smell of patchouli. In my brain, that scent was perpetually linked with another smell I dislike, but I didn’t discover that until very recently. I don’t want to offend anyone by mentioning specifically what the other smell is, but let’s just say it’s a linked to the use of patchouli oil as a body fragrance.
Then slowly, over the past couple of months, I started noticing a certain aroma here at the factory and thinking to myself- what is that?… it smells good! I was shocked to discover that the smell I liked was patchouli! So I began to experiment. At first I tried burning one of our synergy blend candles, Escentual Love, where patchouli is combined with rosewood and lavender. But, I only committed to a mini tin– not a full sized candle. I really began to enjoy the wonderful, warm and earthy vibe from that candle and before I knew it, I had burned out the entire tin. So I progressed to the Escentual Love large candle tin. It didn’t take long before I burned through that one also. Could I take the next step- burning a single scent patchouli candle?
I’m not sure if my newly discovered affinity for patchouli is due to the absence of the other scent I had previously mentally linked to it or if I liked it now because we use such high quality essential oils in our aromatherapy soy candles. Either way, now is a great time to try it out for yourself… we just reduced the price! Got commitment issues like me? Test the waters with our patchouli tea lights. Already a patchouli fan? Go for the large round pillar.

It’s back to school time- and whether you’re a student or not- it’s a good time to refocus and clear your head as the weather starts to cool a bit. Our Clear Head synergy has a cool, refreshing scent that aids concentration and can help focus the mind. Each individual essential oil in this blend contributes unique properties to this lovely synergy.
Eucalyptus has the ability to literally clear the head, as it opens the sinuses and acts as a decongestant. A study conducted by scientists at the University of Miami found that inhaling rosemary boosted alertness, eased anxiety and amplified mental abilities. Peppermint oil has long been regarded as an effective stimulant and has been scientifically proven to increase mental accuracy.
All of these wonderful qualities in our invigorating Clear Head aromatherapy synergy candle will help ease the transition from long, care-free summer days into shortening, cooler fall days. And for you students out there, this candle might come in handy when you’re cramming the night before that exam or when you’ve procrastinated writing that paper down to the wire!
